Home Fire Safety Tips

Smoke alarms save lives. Test every smoke alarm in your home once a month and replace batteries as required. Ensure alarms are installed and maintained according to Ontario Fire Code requirements.

Every household should have an escape plan with:

  • Two ways out of every room where possible
  • A designated outdoor meeting place
  • Practice drills at least twice a year

Ensure hallways, stairways, doors, and windows remain clear of clutter so everyone can exit quickly during an emergency.

Keep a properly rated fire extinguisher accessible and ensure household members understand when and how to use it. Remember: if the fire is growing or you are unsure, get out immediately and call 9-1-1.

  • Avoid overloading outlets
  • Replace damaged cords
  • Use extension cords only as intended
  • Have electrical concerns inspected by a qualified professional

Keep gasoline, propane, and other flammable products in approved containers and away from heat sources.

What to do if a fire occurs?

If you discover smoke or fire:

  1. Get everyone out immediately.
  2. Close doors behind you when leaving to help slow the spread of fire and smoke.
  3. Call 9-1-1 from a safe location.
  4. Go directly to your designated meeting place.
  5. Never re-enter a burning building.

Remember: Get Out. Stay Out. Call 9-1-1.
