Starting a Business

Business licenses are not required to operate a business in Plympton-Wyoming. Depending on the industry, inspections may be required from Lambton Public Health or the Fire Department. 

Businesses must be compatible with the subject properties zoning, please contact our Planning Department to ensure your business proposal conforms to the zoning permitted uses.

A change of use permit is required in Ontario when the way a building or part of a building is used is altered, even if no construction is involved. This permit ensures that the new use complies with the Ontario Building Code, zoning bylaws, and other relevant regulations, primarily for health and safety reasons. Contact our Building Services Department to see if a change of use permit is required.

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) provides information for setting up your business

Canada Business Ontario (CBO) is a federal-provincial government partnership that helps Ontario entrepreneurs find government business information. CBO provides accurate and relevant information to help plan for, begin, expand or exit your business, including:

• Reducing the complexity of dealing with multiple levels of government
• Enabling entrepreneurs to make well-informed business decisions in a global economy
• Contributing to business success through business planning, market research and the use of strategic business information

Community Futures Development Corporations (CFDCs) offer services that help Ontario's rural and northern communities expand their economies. As community-based, non-profit organizations, CFDCs are run by a board of local volunteer professionals who encourage entrepreneurship and exploring economic opportunities.

Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada provides funding, advice and support to a network of CFDCs across Ontario who provide the following services:

• Community economic planning and development
• Investment in local business
• Business development and counselling services

The Ontario Ministry of Labour provides small business resources and tools to encourage safe, fair and harmonious workplace practices. 

The Sarnia-Lambton Business Development Corporation is a not-for-profit agency funded by the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario), providing business counselling and financing to entrepreneurs in Lambton County, as well as assisting with various community-based economic development projects. The agency helps small businesses with:

• Proposals
• Business plans
• Starting a business
• Consulting

The Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership has officially launched the Starter Company Plus, a grant program targeting businesses who have growth plans as well as start-ups.
