2024 Solar Eclipse - April 8th

Please be advised that on April 8th between the hours of 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. a solar ecipse will be occuring. For many people this is a once-in-a-lifetime event, when the moon will move between the sun and earth to create a total solar eclipse. 

In southwestern Ontario, the eclipse’s path of totality will pass through a number of cities and towns along the north shore of Lake Erie and the Niagara region, plunging them into darkness for a few minutes.  People outside of the Path of Totality will be able to observe a partial solar eclipse.

Eclipse Safety:

While these events are awe-inspiring, they also pose potential risks to eyesight if proper precautions are not taken.  

The danger lies in the fact that even during a partial eclipse, the sun's intense radiation can cause severe damage to the eyes.  Even a brief look at the partly eclipsed Sun can result in harm to the eyes.  

If watching a solar eclipse, you MUST look through specialty Solar Viewing Glasses or a safe handheld Solar Viewer at all times.  Eclipse Glasses are NOT regular sunglasses.  Regular Sunglasses, no matter how Dark, are NOT safe for viewing the sun.

Eclipse glasses should be ISO-12312-2 and CE Certified.

Children should have extra supervision during eclipses as they may not fully comprehend the risks involved.  Parents are encouraged to educate their children about eye safety and provide proper filters or alternative safe viewing methods.
